Nothing could safeguard the hours
they were swallowed up by the days
the days swallowed up in weeks
Â
so many things falling
from the corners
of Time’s mouth
Â
as the weeks were swallowed up
by the years
the flavors of long ago
entire Seasons
however hot or cold
sweet or bitter
forgotten.
Â
Those times when
our favorite TV shows
were new
and our children were
small
and there was still color
in our hair
Â
the dogs under the table
got those a long time ago
Â
nothing left
but us
and a dispiriting pile
of dirty plates.
